Antwerp Gateway NV is accelerating the decarbonisation of its terminal operations through a major electrification programme at its container terminal in the Port of Antwerp-Bruges. The initiative is supported by the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) - Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF).

The programme aims to transition a significant part of terminal operations from diesel-powered equipment to fully electric alternatives. To enable this shift, Antwerp Gateway is investing in new electrical infrastructure and advanced charging systems.

Key Investments

The project encompasses the deployment of several strategic components:

  • Electric terminal tractors and charging systems
These will support a substantial reduction in emissions linked to rail-related operations
    on the terminal.
  • Electric Automatic Stacking Cranes (ASCs)
Including the required electrical infrastructure to power the new zero-emission
    equipment.
  • Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and photovoltaic installation
Designed to optimise energy use, enhance grid stability and support renewable energy
    integration.

Through these investments, Antwerp Gateway will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and local pollutants. The project supports the wider EU goal of expanding alternative fuels infrastructure and contributes directly to the development of a sustainable, smart and resilient transport network.

Electrification is a key pillar of Antwerp Gateway’s climate strategy. This project marks an important step towards achieving the terminal’s objective of reducing CO₂ emissions by 51% by 2030 compared to 2022, while ensuring operational reliability and performance remain at the highest level.

European Union Support

The project is co-funded by the European Union’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) - Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF), with Antwerp Gateway NV as the sole beneficiary. It contributes to the EU’s ambition to build a future-proof transport system along the TEN-T network, supported by clean and innovative energy solutions.
