DP World is making a £60m investment in the UK’s trading capacity with an order of four new quay cranes for its Southampton container terminal.

The new cranes will be the largest quay cranes in Europe and can perform quad lifts, moving two 40ft containers together from ship to yard in a single move, reducing the time taken to load and unload large container vessels.

The quay cranes, which stand taller than Big Ben and each weigh more than 2,000 tonnes, are scheduled to arrive from mid-2026. Designed to service the largest ships currently in operation, including 24,000 TEU megaships, the cranes have an operational lifespan of approximately 25 years and are a key investment to future-proof DP World Southampton’s trading capabilities.
 

SAFER AND MORE SUSTAINABLE

From quay cranes that regenerate electricity back to the grid, to tyre re-moulding which pro-longs their life and reduces waste, as well as the replacement of onsite vehicles to fully-electric, DP World is always exploring ways it can reduce its impact on the environment. 
Southampton was the first port in the UK to eliminate fossil diesel from its operations entirely and transition to Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil, and as of 2025 we achieved 98% reduction of operational C02e emissions.

At DP World Southampton, our Remote Pinning Station is a world-first,  designed to enhance worker safety and productivity.
It uses a remote system to handle the pinning process, eliminating the need for staff to work near suspended loads or in live operational areas. 
The station is located away from the quay and integrates with the terminal's other systems, providing real-time visibility for supervisors.

Road connectivity

The UK’s motorway network is on our doorstep. And if there is a traffic congestion problem, hauliers are not stuck waiting; there are alternative routes.

 

Offering excellent connections – it’s just two miles from the dock gates to the M271, which links directly to the M27. From there, take your pick – north, south, east or west. Plus we’re closer than you think with the distance from Southampton to the UK’s ‘golden triangle’ of distribution centres 15 miles less than from Felixstowe, and 20 miles less than from Thamesport.
