FUTURE-READY

INVESTING IN RESILIENCE

Our ongoing commitment to expand London Gateway includes a £1bn investment in two new deep-water berths and a second rail terminal, which will establish the facility as the UK's largest container port by the end of the decade.

Additional future-proofing projects include BOXBAY’s new Empty Superstack, which will transform port operations and set a new global benchmark for efficiency and safety.

We’re preparing more resilient trade solutions, creating and supporting thousands of jobs, and further enhancing our locations as strategic gateways to UK and European markets.

PORT INNOVATION

ELECTRIFICATION
& AUTOMATION

London Gateway berth 4 has set the benchmark for electrified port operations using an innovative fleet of fully electric straddle careers, internal vehicles and equipment, setting a new standard for low-carbon port operations. Further supporting the electric operations, London Gateway has Europe’s first ultra-high-power charging system for ports, enabling ultra-rapid charging and efficient operations while eliminating almost all noise pollution, vibrations and emissions.

At DP World, we’ve seen the advantages of automation first-hand. The crown jewels of our London Gateway operation are 12 of the largest ship-to-shore cranes in the world. They are 138m giants that can be operated remotely as they lift four 20-foot containers (or two 40 footers) at time. Because they’re unmanned, these cranes can operate in almost any weather, including when high winds make it impossible for standard ports to operate. Beyond the shore, 60 automated stacking cranes aided by an incredible array of sensors and automated cameras, load and unload around 1,800 trucks per day.

And now, we will soon be the first European port to install the revolutionary empty container handling system, BOXBAY Empty Superstack. Using High Bay Storage technology, the system will store 20- and 40-foot empty containers up to 16 tiers high inside a fully enclosed, automated facility, capable of more than 200 container moves per hour on the waterside. The result is a dramatic improvement in yard capacity, safety, and operational efficiency.
