VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA | SEPTEMBER 17, 2024 – DP World, a global leader in logistics and supply chain solutions, is pleased to announce a donation of $100,000 to the BC Cancer Foundation in Nanaimo, British Columbia. This donation, to be allocated over the next two years, will be used to enhance cancer care services throughout the region.
The funds will be directed towards the development of the new BC Cancer centre in Nanaimo, which is expected to open by 2028. The upcoming centre will feature advanced facilities, including new radiation therapy spaces, a PET/CT machine, and outpatient ambulatory care services. The new centre will enhance the existing regional cancer services provided by BC Cancer in Victoria by alleviating the travel burden for residents of central and northern Vancouver Island and creating more capacity for life-saving care.
Doug Smith, CEO of DP World in Canada, said: “As members of the Nanaimo community, we are honoured to play a role in bringing the new BC Cancer Centre to the city. What began as modest participation in a fundraising event has grown into a robust partnership dedicated to advancing cancer research and improving care. At DP World, our commitment goes beyond our core logistical operations to improve public health in the communities where we live and work.”
The contribution reflects DP World’s deep commitment to corporate social responsibility and community welfare. The donation aligns with the United Nations’ Strategic Development Goal 3: “Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.”
William Litchfield, Executive Director – Vancouver Island, BC Cancer Foundation, said: “We are deeply grateful to DP World for their partnership and generosity. With one in two of us facing cancer in our lifetime, their support for the new BC Cancer Centre in Nanaimo is bringing world-class care closer to home for countless families. DP World’s commitment to enhancing cancer care access in our region reflects their dedication to the well-being of the communities they serve.”
This initiative is part of the comprehensive 10-year B.C. Cancer Action Plan aimed at improving prevention, detection, and treatment of cancer, ensuring better care today and readiness for future needs. Construction is expected to begin in 2025 with completion projected for 2028.
Smith added: “Cancer has profoundly affected DP World, touching the lives of our employees and their families. Driven by these personal experiences, our ongoing support for organizations like the BC Cancer Foundation demonstrate our unwavering commitment to providing support within our communities.”
