MY CAREER JOURNEY: PAUL MYERS, FROM APPRENTICE TO PROCUREMENT SPECIALIST
Date: 13/02/2025
This National Apprenticeship Week, we asked Paul Myers, Procurement Specialist at London Gateway, about his journey as an apprentice at DP World.
- What was your first role at DP World, and have your career aspirations changed since joining the team?
I was a Procurement Apprentice for 2 years before being offered a permanent position as a Procurement Specialist.
Throughout my time with DP World I have achieved Level 3 CIPS (Chartered in Procurement and Supply) Advance Certificate and passed the apprenticeship scheme with a Distinction. As the procurement team has been expanding in UK and into wider Europe, I have had unique opportunities such as visiting the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking for our procurement conference, visiting both Rotterdam port and Antwerp port, and interacting with the wider procurement team, getting experience within the contract logistics industry by taking on the procurement for a project launch site. I now want to further my career within procurement and achieve MCIPS accreditation, which is recognised globally.
- What were the London Gateway team like when you joined as an apprentice?
Very welcoming, wanting me to dive straight into the business, learn different terminologies and make valuable connections with different departments and stakeholders within the business.
- What was your favourite experience during your apprenticeship?
Having the opportunity to visit the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking. We had the fantastic opportunity for our European Procurement Conference to be held there, which was a once in a lifetime opportunity.
- Beyond the skills required for your role in Procurement, what else did your apprenticeship teach you?
Beyond job-specific skills, my apprenticeship taught me the importance of communication and teamwork in a professional environment. It also helped me develop resilience, adaptability and a strong work ethic, which are essential for career growth. Also interacting with people from different departments and understand the way the port works and operates.
- Do you have any advice for someone considering an apprenticeship with DP World?
Fully embrace the apprenticeship by taking advantage of every opportunity, from travel and sponsorship events to additional training and networking. Stay proactive, ask questions, and push yourself beyond your comfort zone to maximise your growth and career prospects.
- Would you recommend joining DP World as an apprentice?
Absolutely, it's the perfect time to join a growing business. The opportunities here are endless.
