LOWER CARBON OPERATIONS

CARING FOR CARGO AND THE FUTURE

Our global sustainability strategy ‘Our World, Our Future’ is woven into everything we do, supporting the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals across safety, climate change, security, community engagement, people development, ethics and well-being.

INVESTING IN RESILIENCE

As part of our global strategy, DP World UK has invested in many measures to enable sustainable trade at its port operations at London Gateway and Southampton.

On 1 October 2021 DP World UK introduced its Energy Transition Contribution (ETC) to support our goal of becoming net zero across all operations by 2050.

We have made significant progress to reduce carbon emissions through maximising efficiency, using renewable energy and displacing fossil fuels and introducing innovative decarbonisation initiatives to help customers reduce their Scope 3 emissions with further projects in the pipeline.

To continue to contribute towards the energy transition investments, the Energy Transition Contribution will be reviewed on a regular basis at both DP World UK ports.

THE ENERGY TRANSITION CONTRIBUTION (ETC)

The ETC supports cleaner energy by funding the cost differential when switching from diesel to sustainable alternatives in the form of Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) and electricity. As a forward-thinking organisation, it is essential that we invest in sustainable solutions.

Equipment Electrification

Electrification is a cornerstone of DP World Ports & Terminals decarbonisation strategy in the UK. Explore the timeline of some of our electrification projects and discover how we are driving sustainable change through a series of impactful projects, past and present.

Transition from Diesel to HVO

In 2022, our UK Ports & Terminals initiated a trial of Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) as a sustainable alternative to diesel for port equipment. Following successful trials in 2022 and 2023, our ports have  exclusively used HVO for fuel since 2024. This shift has resulted in an outstanding reduction of 98% in fuel usage emissions. Explore the timeline of our emissions figures with the introduction of HVO.

FUTURE PROJECTS

We’re proud to be investing in a range of decarbonisation projects funded by the ETC, and are continually looking at new projects to improve the efficiency of our operations. supporting our journey towards a lower carbon future. Upcoming initiatives include:

icon - shoreside power

Introduction of Shoreside Power

allowing our customers vessels to plug into renewable energy while at berth, significantly reducing emissions.

icon - solar panel

Rolling out multiple solar energy projects

across our sites to further increase onsite renewable energy generation.

icon - truck charging

Installing charging infrastructure

enabling ultra-rapid charging for electric trucks, internal vehicles and equipment.

Carbon Inset Programme

Funded by the Energy Transition Commitment (ETC), our Carbon Inset Programme enables import cargo owners to reduce their Scope 3 emissions in a verified and impactful way. Registered importers routing cargo through DP World’s UK ports at Southampton and London Gateway can receive carbon inset credits per import laden container. These are issued quarterly via independently verified certificates.

Low Carbon Truck Programme

In addition, the DP World Low Carbon Truck Programme launched in September 2025, offers Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) to truck operators at the same cost as diesel, helping reduce Scope 1 and 3 emissions across the supply chain.
