SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA, 28 January 2025: DP World and NSW Ports are co-investing A$400 million to extend the rail terminal at Port Botany in Sydney which will transform its logistics capability and reinforce the city’s position as a vital gateway for international trade.

NSW Ports is contributing A$148 million for the new facility which will service both the Container Terminal and the Logistics Park, one of Australia’s best examples of the global trend for locating major logistics facilities close to major arterial ports. The project – which will start on site in June and take two years to compete – comprises the addition of five new rail sidings to accommodate 600-metre-long regional trains.

Nicolaj Noes, Executive Vice President, Oceania, DP World, said: “Our investment in this new port-centric logistics infrastructure will deliver more capacity, superior agility, seamless integration of processes, increased productivity and added reliability. We cannot wait for our present and future customers to reap the benefits of this world-class facility, which accelerates the shift of freight from road to rail while reducing carbon emissions and improving Sydney’s air quality at the same time.”

Marika Calfas, CEO of NSW Ports, said: “This collaboration with DP World to deliver a new, enhanced, rail terminal continues the growth of on-dock rail capacity at Port Botany to service the state’s import and export trade. This new rail terminal will enable more containers to be moved by rail, reducing the growth of trucks on roads and will deliver greater efficiency for the state’s container supply chains. Port Botany is uniquely the only port in Australia with on-dock rail within each container terminal, connected to an extensive network of metropolitan and regional intermodal terminals including by dedicated freight rail.

The investment at Port Botany is the latest example of DP World investing in its rail capabilities across several continents as it extends its reach into the global supply chain. The logistics giant’s customers benefit from intermodal rail services linking its operations across Europe, North America, South America, Africa, India and the Middle East, with a first ever freight train between Abu Dhabi and its Jebel Ali flagship in Dubai due to launch shortly.

Port Botany is New South Wales’ container port and has Australia's largest common user bulk liquids facility. Handling 2.8 million TEUs annually, it contributes A$10.7 billion to New South Wales’ Gross State Product each year. It is the only port in Australia with on-dock rail at all three of its container terminals and is directly connected, including via dedicated freight rail, to a network of metropolitan intermodal terminals and regional intermodal terminals.

Within the port, DP World operates the 20-hectare Sydney Logistics Park, the largest in the city with a capacity of more than 18,500 TEUs, offering services including warehousing, bonded storage quarantine activities, reefer monitoring and storage as well as container maintenance and repair.

Further inland, DP World partners with Stockland to operate a contract logistics hub at Yennora Intermodal Terminal, one of the largest logistics facilities in the Southern Hemisphere. Earlier this year, DP World announced the launch of a new rail service at the Terminal, enabling it to offer a fully integrated supply chain service for its customers.

These rail upgrades build on DP World’s global intermodal expertise, which spans Europe, North America, South America, Africa, India, and the Middle East. This includes successful initiatives like the ASEAN Express in Asia and expanded rail services in the UK.

Brisbane, Australia, 17 December 2024: In its latest move toward greener logistics, DP World has unveiled a fully electric internal transfer vehicle (ITV) within its operations at the Port of Brisbane’s Fisherman Island. The bold step of introducing an electric ITV in its fleet – a first for DP World in Australia – is projected to eliminate more than 120,000 litres of diesel fuel consumption annually, reinforcing DP World’s leadership toward sustainable, efficient port operations.

As a key trade hub for agricultural exports, motor vehicle imports, and containerised trade, Fisherman Island plays a vital role in Queensland’s economy. The new electric ITV is designed to carry containers which can weigh as much as 88 tonnes within the port, replacing diesel-powered ITVs, reducing carbon emissions and supporting Queensland’s environmental and economic goals.

This initiative is part of DP World’s sustainability strategy to build an efficient and sustainable supply chain for the future, which includes targets to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, with a near-term target of 42% reduction of carbon footprint by 2030.

From today, the Yennora Intermodal Terminal will offer two direct rail services to and from Port Botany per day on a dedicated DP World-owned and operated rail line. The daily port-rail service is expected to manage an annual rail capacity of 160,000 20-foot cargo shipping containers, known as TEUs, to achieve higher efficiencies. It is also expected to reduce up to 160 truck trips per day, lowering overall emissions.

This significant milestone will enable DP World to provide an integrated supply chain solution across landside operations, contract logistics and freight forwarding. DP World's enhanced logistics capabilities will provide cost efficiencies, reduce transit times, and improve supply chain resilience.

Shared Long Term Vision for a Major Contracts Logistics Hub

Located around 30 kilometres west of the Sydney central business district, Stockland’s Yennora Intermodal Terminal is one of the largest distribution centres in Oceania and is strategically positioned as a key logistics hub in Sydney. Covering more than 70 hectares with 300,000 square metres of warehouse space, it has the scale, connectivity and flexibility to meet supply chain requirements for customers to improve the speed and cost of transporting cargo to and from Port Botany and surrounding areas.

In August 2023, DP World entered a strategic partnership with Stockland to operate a warehousing facility and dedicated port-rail service. Today, DP World manages about 125,000 square metres of warehousing space at Yennora, and alongside this rail service, is well-positioned to offer a fully integrated supply chain service for customers.

Vientiane, Laos, 6 May 2024: DP World has completed the acquisition of Savan Logistics which operates the Savannakhet dry port in the Savannakhet Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Laos, the first SEZ in the country. Savan Logistics has been operating the dry port since 2016.

Situated on the West end of the 1,450km-long East-West Economic Corridor – linking Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam -- the 140,456 sqm dry port is utilised by key regional cargo owners and logistics companies to connect various supply chains along the corridor. It also boasts about 23,000 sqm of warehousing facilities, including a 11,000 sqm bonded area.

In addition to dry port and warehousing services, DP World will also manage cross-border transport, freight forwarding, and integrated logistics solutions.

Glen Hilton, CEO & Managing Director, Asia Pacific, DP World, said: “This is an important move for us to boost the connectivity of the region. The dry port is strategically located close to our existing portfolio of ports, terminals, and landside facilities along the East-West Economic Corridor, in Thailand and Vietnam. According to the Asian Development Bank, Laos’ economy is expected to grow by about 4% in 2024, enabled by strategic partnerships and business-friendly policies forged by the government. The country’s chairmanship of the ASEAN summit is also expected to provide Laos with additional international exposure, promoting investment and spurring cross-border cooperation its neighbours.

This milestone development reinforces the commitment which DP World has, to propel trade in and for Asia Pacific by extending its footprint to strategic locations. In recent weeks, the company announced partnerships with Malaysia’s Sabah Ports Sdn. Bhd and Asian Terminals Inc (ATI) to manage Sapangar Bay Container Port in East Malaysia and Tanza Barge Terminal in the Philippines, respectively.

Busan, South Korea, 15 March 2024: DP World has announced a US$50 million (approximately ₩66 billion) investment to develop a new logistics centre in Busan New Port, strengthening the port’s position as a logistics hub for Northeast Asia and reinforcing the global standing of the wider Busan-Jinhae Free Economic Zone (BJFEZ) in business and logistics.

Construction of the facility in the 75,000-sqm land is set to commence at the end of 2024, with operations expected to start by the second quarter of 2026. The DP World Busan Logistics Centre (BLC) will have capacity to process nearly 80,000 TEUs of cargo per year by 2028 and offer comprehensive value-added logistics services such as assembly, processing, and packaging to local and regional customers.

Leveraging South Korea’s manufacturing prowess and the BJFEZ’s central position in the country’s advanced manufacturing sector, the BLC plans to specialise in exports of completed automobiles, automotive parts and materials, fishery equipment, machinery and other key Korean industry outputs.

BJFEZ is the third-largest free economic zone in South Korea, with 700 million people living within a 1,200km radius. A gateway to Eurasia and the Pacific, the economic zone is developing a mega ‘Logistics Tri-Port’, which will span sea, air and land ports including Busan New Port, the forthcoming Jinhae New Port, the forthcoming Gadeok International Airport and the Busan New Port Freight Station with rail connections to parts of Eurasia.

Integrating new logistics centre into DP World’s South Korean operations

DP World already has significant presence in South Korea. Through its subsidiary, Pusan Newport Company (PNC), it operates the largest terminal in the Port of Busan, the world’s second busiest transhipment port and one of the highest performing ports in Asia. In 2020, DP World also acquired a majority stake in UNICO Logistics, a Korean multimodal transport and rail specialist with a large footprint in East Asia, Central Asia and Russia.

As part of the US$50 million investment, DP World will integrate operations of the new BLC with freight handling solutions from PNC and UNICO Logistics’ transcontinental rail freight services.

Beyond its commercial activities, DP World also engages local communities by hosting groundbreaking sport events. Later this year, DP World Tour will make a stop in South Korea as part of efforts to help cultivate love of golf for the growing fanbase in the country.

APAC is projected to be the fastest-growing region in the world in terms of both imports and exports. Intra-Asia trade is also on the rise, with one third of APAC executives saying that Southeast Asia is one of their primary export markets.

Singapore, 17 January 2024: New research reveals that optimism prevails among businesses across Asia Pacific (APAC) who are leveraging technology and reconfiguring their supply chains to navigate continuing geopolitical and economic uncertainty.

The latest Trade in Transition research, commissioned by leading global smart logistics solutions provider DP World and led by Economist Impact, captured the perspectives of trade experts and senior executives globally. Unveiled at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos earlier this week, the report found that the primary driver of optimism in APAC is a growing belief that technology will transform the efficiency and resilience of supply chains. In the face of political instability, high inflation and interest rates as well as economic downturn in key markets, businesses are also implementing friendshoring and dual supply chain strategies to manage risk across their operations.

Technology spurs optimism in Asia Pacific supply chains

When asked to assess the future of global trade, 32% of APAC business leaders cited the ability of technology to improve supply chain efficacy and resilience as their main reason for optimism. 27% also expect technological upgrades to serve as primary growth drivers for their companies’ imports.

At the core of these positive sentiments is the increasing adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI). 99% of APAC businesses are using AI to revolutionise at least one aspect of their supply chain management, including:

Streamlining operating costs (cited by 34% of respondents);
Improving resource planning to reduce supply chain disruptions (31%); and
Identifying new sources of demand (29%).

Businesses are set to proactively ramp up their technological adoption in 2024, underscoring a commitment to innovate given an ever-changing operating environment. 39% are prioritising increasing research and development efforts to enhance products, services and supply chain operations. Of those surveyed in APAC:

32% are poised to incorporate advanced automation and robotics to amplify logistical efficiencies;
27% intend to embrace augmented or virtual reality for troubleshooting and repairs; and
25% will integrate blockchain technology to enhance traceability, security, and data protection.

Supply chains adapt as economic and geopolitical tensions persist

Among APAC executives, the enduring threat of inflation was cited by 28% as their main concern over the next two years. Additionally, 26% express fears of economic downturn in key markets where they operate. In response to economic headwinds, an increasing number of APAC businesses are restructuring their supply chains, with 24% opting for fewer suppliers – a 13 percentage point increase from the previous year. Many more are also looking within Asia for trade opportunities, with 30% of APAC executives stating that Southeast Asia is one of their primary export markets.

Beyond economic fears, geopolitical tensions also weigh heavily on executives’ minds. Economist Impact conducted a quantitative trade analysis through the Global Trade Analysis Project (GTAP) platform to estimate the potential global output loss from hypothetical scenarios of further ‘geo-economic fragmentation.’ In a scenario focused on significantly increased trade barriers on high-tech goods – a focal point in the current geopolitical climate – the GTAP modelling projected a 0.9% decline in worldwide GDP.

In APAC, nearly a quarter of businesses express concerns about political instability in sourcing markets. Almost a fifth cite worries about heightened geopolitical uncertainty, with ongoing events such as the war in Ukraine and tensions between the US and China. To mitigate risk, a third are utilising friendshoring, while a similar proportion say that they are establishing parallel supply chains or employing dual sourcing.

Supply chain diversification is particularly evident in APAC with more and more businesses adopting a ‘China+1’ strategy. Countries like Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam, which firms see as lower risk production destinations, are benefitting from this trend. However, despite many businesses indicating that they are diversifying supply chains away from China, manufacturing levels in the world’s second largest economy remain robust, demonstrating the nuanced nature of supply chain dynamics in the region.

The fourth annual Trade in Transition study, commissioned by DP World and led by Economist Impact, captured the perspectives of trade experts and senior executives across a variety of regions and sectors. This period of unprecedented transformation – heightened geopolitical risk, the urgent realities of climate change and significant advancements in technologies – is causing businesses to face complex challenges. Yet there are also opportunities.

2023 was a pivotal year in supply chain innovation as technology drives optimism for 2024

The global survey of 3,500 company executives found technologies that improve supply chain efficacy and resilience to be the main source of optimism for business leaders when asked to assess the future of global trade. At the core of this sentiment is the widespread adoption of AI, with 98% of executives already using AI to revolutionise at least one aspect of their supply chain operations.

From solving inventory management issues and reducing trade expenses to optimising transport routes, executives are taking advantage of integrating AI. A third of businesses are utilising AI to deliver a reduction in overall trade operation costs and the same amount to enhance resource and supply chain planning. Over one-third of companies view boosting the use of digital tools for enhanced inventory management as the most effective strategy in cutting overall trade and supply chain costs.

Businesses expect to ramp up their technological adoption further this year, a proactive approach that underscores a commitment to deploying innovation to navigate the evolving business landscape with increased efficiency and resilience. Of those surveyed, a third will focus on advanced automation and robotics for logistics efficiency; 28% will turn to blockchain for enhanced traceability and data security; and 21% will embrace artificial intelligence, big-data analytics and predictive analytics for real-time insights and disruption forecasting.

Supply chains adapt as geopolitical tensions weigh

In the new era of globalisation, a landscape of heightened geopolitical risk is shaping the contours of global trade as businesses attempt to reduce risks across their supply chains. More than a third of companies are using friendshoring to shape trade and supply chain operations, while 32% are creating parallel supply chains or dual sourcing.

In addition, more than a quarter are opting for fewer suppliers – a 16-percentage point increase from the previous year – as businesses weigh the advantages of consolidation against diversification and control against resilience.

Concerns that political instability, rising trade friction and global fragmentation could hamper growth are increasing. A fifth of businesses are concerned with higher tariffs, or uncertainties around tariffs, in key markets they export to or import from. In fact, 22% of executives emphasised the challenge of political instability in their sourcing markets, while almost a quarter (23%) are concerned about heightened geopolitical uncertainty.

Economist Impact conducted a quantitative trade analysis through the Global Trade Analysis Project (GTAP) platform to estimate the potential global output loss from hypothetical scenarios of further “geo-economic fragmentation.” In a scenario focused on significantly increased trade barriers on high-tech goods – a focal point in the current geopolitical climate – Economist Impact projected a 0.9% decline in worldwide GDP.

Speaking at the launch of the report at the World Economic Forum in Davos today, DP World Group Chairman and CEO Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem said: “The findings in this report reveal a remarkable optimism, despite businesses having to operate in an increasingly uncertain environment. Governments can maximise the significant economic benefits of trade by providing the predictability that businesses need, while reducing trade friction. Strategic Expansion to Match Growing Demand

Queensland’s strategic location on Australia’s eastern seaboard, strong business environment and skilled workforce have paved the way for the state cultivating a A$100 billion export economy, equivalent to over a fifth of the country’s exports[1]. The Fisherman’s Island Terminal offers stacking cranes, an advanced operating system and 900 metres of quayline. Earlier in the year, the terminal welcomed the CMA CGM Pelleas, the longest container ship to ever dock in Brisbane.

Adjacent to the container terminal is the Brisbane Multimodal Terminal (BMT) with road and rail links to the city and the rest of the region. The dual-gauge rail link and location of the BMT make it possible to move large volumes of cargo into and out of the port by rail.

Dubai (UAE), 29 November 2023: Frozen food temperatures could be changed by just three degrees to save the carbon dioxide emissions of 3.8 million cars per year, research suggests.

Most frozen food is transported and stored at -18°C, a standard that was set 93 years ago and has not changed since.

A move to -15°C could make a significant environmental impact with no compromise on food safety or quality, the study found.

The experts, from the Paris-based International Institute of Refrigeration, the University of Birmingham and London South Bank University, among others, found that the small change could:

Save 17.7 million metric tonnes of carbon dioxide per year, the equivalent annual emissions of 3.8m cars annually
Create energy savings of around 25 terawatt-hours (TW/h) – equivalent to 8.63% of the UK’s annual energy consumption
Cut costs in the supply chain by at least 5% and in some areas by up to 12%

The research was supported by the leading global logistics firm and principal partner in COP28, DP World, which has set up an industry-wide coalition to explore the feasibility of this change, named Join the Move to -15°C.

This coalition aims to redefine frozen food temperature standards to cut greenhouse gases, lower supply chain costs and secure food resources for the world’s growing population.

The coalition has already been joined by leading industry organizations including: U.S. based AJC Group, A.P. Moller – Maersk (Maersk) of Denmark; Daikin of Japan; DP World; the Global Cold Chain Alliance; Switzerland’s Kuehne + Nagel International; U.S. based Lineage; Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) of Geneva; and Singapore-based Ocean Network Express (ONE).

Maha AlQattan, Group Chief Sustainability Officer at DP World, said: “Frozen food standards have not been updated in almost a century. They are long overdue for revision.

“A small temperature increase could have huge benefits but - however committed each individual organisation is - the industry can only change what’s possible by working together.

“With this research and with our newly formed coalition, we aim to support collaboration across the industry to find viable ways to achieve the sector’s shared net zero ambition by 2050.

“The Move to -15°C will bring the industry together to explore new, greener standards to help decarbonise the sector on a global scale. Through this research, we can see how we can deploy accessible storage technologies in all markets to freeze food at sustainable temperatures, while reducing food scarcity for vulnerable and developed communities.”

Building resilience and ensuring future food security

Annually hundreds of millions of tonnes of food from blueberries to broccoli is transported around the world.

While freezing food extends shelf life, it comes with a significant environmental cost – as 2-3% more energy is required for every degree below zero that food is stored at.

The logistics industry is working to decarbonise and facing rising energy bills.

Yet demand for frozen food is increasing as appetites evolve in developing countries and price-conscious consumers seek nutritious, tasty food at more affordable prices.

At the same time, experts estimate that 12% of food produced annually is wasted due to a lack of refrigerated and frozen logistics, called the ‘cold chain’ in the industry, highlighting a significant need for greater capacity.

Studies also suggest that 1.3 billion tonnes of edible food is thrown away every year – a third of global food production for human consumption.

The need is particularly acute in areas like Sub-Saharan Africa and the Subcontinent. In Pakistan in 2022, for example, half of exportable mangoes were lost due to an extreme heatwave1.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organisation, more than 820 million people are hungry today and 2 billion – roughly a quarter of the world’s population – suffer from food insecurity2.

Professor Toby Peters, University of Birmingham and Heriot-Watt University and director of the Centre for Sustainable Cooling said: “Cold chains are critical infrastructure, vital for a well-functioning society and economy. They underpin our access to safe and nutritious food and health, as well as our ability to spur economic growth.”

He added: “Cold chain infrastructure, and the lack of it, have implications for global climate change and the environment.”

Climate change-driven events such as droughts, floods, and heatwaves can reduce crop yields and harm livestock health and productivity. But freezing food can protect food sources and their nutritional value for months amid such crises.

Join the Move to -15°C is an initiative to create a just transition, deploying accessible storage technologies globally to freeze food at sustainable temperatures to reduce food scarcity for vulnerable and developed communities alike.

Prof Peters added: “The UN predicts a population of 9.7 billion by 2050. To ensure food accessibility, we must close the 56% gap in the global food supply between what was produced in 2010 and what will be needed in 2050.

“Cutting cold chain emissions and transforming how food is safely stored and moved today helps ensure we can keep sustainably feeding communities across the globe as populations and global temperatures rise, protecting nutritious food sources for years to come.

“Building on this research, DP World’s coalition can be a key tool for overcoming today’s food challenges too, providing a stable inventory of quality food for the 820 million starving people worldwide and security for another 2 billion who are struggling with food scarcity.”

Australia, 28 November 2023: This is an update on the recent cybersecurity incident impacting DP World Australia.

On Friday 10 November 2023, the DP World Australia technology team detected unauthorised access to the company’s Australian corporate network. To contain the incident, the DP World Australia team made the decision to disconnect the network from the Internet. While this impacted land-side port operations it also successfully contained the incident.

From the time of first detection, the DP World Australia team and its advisers have worked extensively to restore operations and investigate the impact of the incident. On Monday 13 November, DP World Australia was able to recommence port operations and since this time it has been working closely with all key stakeholders to ensure a rapid return to normal operations.

DP World Australia’s incident response played a crucial role in its ability to effectively identify, protect, detect, respond to, and recover from the incident. By 20 November, some seven days after port operations recommenced and 10 days after first detecting the incident, DP World Australia has cleared 100% of the backlog, comprising some 30,137 containers.

DP World Australia’s investigation has confirmed that the incident was confined to the Australian operations and did not impact any other markets where DP World operates. It also confirmed that no ransomware was found or deployed within the DP World Australia network (no ransomware executables, no encrypted files and no ransom demands).

Regrettably, DP World Australia can confirm that some of its files were accessed by the unauthorised third party and a small amount of data was exfiltrated from the DP World Australia network. While the investigation has shown that customer data was not affected, some of the impacted data includes the personal information of current and previous employees of DP World Australia.

DP World Australia is in the process of notifying impacted individuals. It has established a cyber response team to support impacted individuals and is providing various support services through its Employee Assistance Programs and organisations like IDCARE and Equifax.

Throughout the incident, DP World Australia has been working closely with the Australian Cyber Security Coordinator, the Australian Cyber Security Centre, the Australian Federal Police, the Department of Home Affairs, Ministers Clare O'Neil MP and Catherine King MP, the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner, and various State and Territory agencies. DP World Australia is grateful for all the support provided to date.

Brisbane, Australia, 27 September 2023: The CMA CGM Pelleas — the longest container ship to ever dock in Brisbane — arrived at the DP World Fisherman’s Island Terminal today. This milestone underscores Brisbane’s increasing importance as a gateway to Australia and a trade hub connecting businesses with customers in the region and around the globe. It also signifies DP World’s capabilities in operating industry-leading ports and terminals that facilitate seamless trade and a resilient supply chain.

The Pelleas is about 350 metres long, and it can transport over 9,600 containers and as much as 111,000 tonnes of cargo. The vessel is currently on the A3 Central Express service, which is a loop starting in Kaohsiung and making calls in Xiamen, Shanghai, Ningbo, Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Earlier this month, the Pelleas also berthed at DP World’s terminal in Port Botany, setting a similar record as the longest vessel to dock at the New South Wales port.

The arrival of the Pelleas at the Port of Brisbane is testament to Queensland’s commitment to enhance its infrastructure, including its ports, to keep pace with its growth ambitions. The state has pledged to invest over A$50 billion in infrastructure over a four-year period from 2021. Annually, it exports roughly A$125 billion and imports around A$72 billion, with most of its key trading partners in Asia.

Serving vessels of this size at DP World’s terminals in Australia demonstrates the scale and quality of the company’s infrastructure and operations, and its role in connecting Australian enterprises with trade opportunities in the region. This includes enabling businesses to tap into the potential of Southeast Asia, which is forecast to contribute A$534 billion via two-way trade with Australia by 2040, by leveraging DP World’s strategic presence and network.

New investment will almost double warehousing capacity at the Yennora Distribution Centre, an intermodal terminal in Sydney, to more than 100,000 square metres.

DP World is expanding its end-to-end supply chain solutions in Australia through a significant new investment in Stockland’s Yennora Distribution Centre in Sydney.

By February 2024, DP World will almost double warehousing capacity at Yennora, by adding three new warehouses with a combined area of nearly 45,000 sqm, to create a major contract logistics hub. These new warehouses – along with an existing 60,000 sqm facility at the site – will be operated in partnership with AWH, Australia’s biggest warehousing provider.

The expanded facility will provide customers with a full end-to-end supply chain service, connecting importers and exporters to a range of logistics services via rail and road. Customers will also benefit from the seamless connectivity to DP World sites at Port Botany and the Sydney Port Precinct, gaining access to a suite of services including warehousing, transportation and freight forwarding.

The expansion is part of DP World's global strategy to become a customer-centric, end-to-end supply chain solutions provider. The company is investing heavily in its logistics capabilities around the world, and the Yennora expansion is a significant step forward in this effort.

The Yennora Distribution Centre is one of the Southern Hemisphere’s largest distribution centres, and among six intermodal terminals servicing the greater Sydney area. The centre operates as an intermodal terminal with rail sidings connected to Main Southern Rail Line providing direct connectivity to Port Botany and DP World’s Sydney Terminal and container park facility for imports and exporters within the zone. DP World will also play a critical role in co-designing a new masterplan for the Yennora Distribution Centre with owner Stockland, one of Australia’s largest diversified property groups.

Results Highlights

Cash generation remains robust, Balance sheet strong

Net cash generated from operating activities stood at $1,951 million 1H 2023 (compared to $1,931 million in 1H 2022).

Leverage (Net debt to adjusted EBITDA) on a pre-IFRS16 basis stands at 2.8x (FY2022: 2.7x). On a post-IFRS16 basis, net leverage stands at 3.2 times compared to 3.0 times in FY2022.

DP World credit rating improves to BBB+ with Stable Outlook

DP World’s credit rating improved by two notches by Fitch to BBB+ with Stable Outlook and one notch by Moody’s to Baa2 with Stable Outlook on improved financial performance and a stronger balance sheet.

DP World is committed to a strong investment grade rating in the medium term.

Selective investment in key growth markets

Capital expenditure of $910 million ($741 million in 1H 2022) was invested across the existing portfolio.

Capex split: $412 million Ports and Terminals, $284 million Logistics and Parks and Economic Zones, $187 million Marine Services and $27 million in Head Office.

Resilient performance in challenging markets

The global economy in 2023 faces numerous challenges, including slowing growth, inflationary pressures, higher interest rates, currency fluctuations, and heightened geopolitics. Due to this weak economic backdrop, trade growth was forecast to soften in 2023, leading to a marginal decline in container volumes as consumers tightened their belts. Additionally, supply chain bottlenecks that emerged post-COVID began to unwind in the second half of 2022, causing freight rates to return to pre-COVID levels and resulting in weaker growth for logistics.

Despite these challenges, our business demonstrated remarkable resilience. Achieving like-for-like growth in a declining market is a testament to the hard work of our team.

Robust performance in Ports & Terminals

DP World containers volumes increased by 3.1%^[1] compared to a market decline of 2.0%^[2] as our portfolio once again outperformed the industry, which demonstrates that we have relevant capacity in the right locations. A strong performance from Asia Pacific was the key driver of growth, while Americas and Europe were softer due to the weaker economic environment. Encouragingly, Jebel Ali (UAE) continues to deliver a steady performance.

Our strategic approach of adding capacity in high-margin cargo locations and investing in automation continues to be a key differentiator as we continue to focus on markets with strong supply-demand dynamics.

Logistics continues to deliver growth

In our Logistics vertical, we have focused on driving revenue synergies and adding new capabilities, which has resulted in new business opportunities. Furthermore, we have worked tirelessly on cost efficiencies which has helped protect margins in this inflationary period.

DP World continues to remove inefficiencies across the supply chain to provide improved connectivity in fast-growing trade lanes. The demand for bespoke supply chain solutions continue to rise as cargo owner’s demands shift, and DP World is well placed to benefit from these developments.

In terms of innovation, we have developed new products like Cargoes Flow, DP World Trade Finance, and Cargoes Logistics, making trade easier for cargo owners, especially SMEs. Our commitment to building intelligent platforms for efficient solutions remains steadfast.

Marine Services providing critical connectivity

Our Marine Services vertical, particularly Unifeeder, which offers efficient and sustainable transport solutions, continues to provide critical connectivity for shipping lines and cargo owners. Decarbonisation is a core focus as we transition to net zero by 2050

Decarbonization is a core focus as we transition to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050. In line with our 'Our World, Our Future' sustainability strategy, we are committed to building, protecting, and maintaining DP World's sustainable operations, economically, socially, and environmentally. Notably, we have achieved a significant 47% reduction in DP World's UAE carbon emissions through our renewable energy programme. Our efforts have been recognized, earning us a top performer ranking by Sustainalytics and a leadership score (A-) from the CDP Climate Change submission.

To continue our progress, we have committed to investing over $500 million in cutting CO2 emissions by 700k in the next 5 years, which accounts to approximately 22% of our total emissions. However, we acknowledge that there is more to achieve, and we remain steadfast in our determination to reach the net zero target by 2050, aligning with the UAE's 2050 strategic initiative.

Group Deputy CEO & CFO Review

DP World has delivered a robust set of first half 2023 results with steady adjusted EBITDA growth of 7.0% to $2,611 million. The adjusted EBITDA margin remained broadly stable as our cost optimization projects help protect profitability.

Reported revenue grew by 13.9% to $9,037 million as the Group benefitted from the full year contribution of acquisitions while like-for-like revenue grew by 7.1% driven by growth in Logistics as our revenue synergy plans begin to attract new customers. Operating profit grew by 8.2% to $1,603 million which was also up 6.1% on a like-for-like basis.

The strengthening of DP World's balance sheet in 2022 has resulted in the Company's credit rating being upgraded by Fitch by two notches to BBB+ with a Stable outlook while Moody’s upgraded by one notch to Baa2 with Stable Outlook.

Asia Pacific and India

As anticipated, the Asia Pacific and India financials was impacted by a weaker performance in Marine Service (Unifeeder ISC) which saw its profitability decline due to lower freight rates. The unwinding of supply chain bottlenecks has resulted in the normalisation of ocean freight rates to pre-covid levels. We anticipate more stability in future performance. In contrast, Ports and Terminals delivered a robust performance with the focus on high margin cargo continuing to drive growth in profitability.

Overall, revenue declined by 16.9% on a reported basis which resulted in adjusted EBITDA of $315 million.

We invested $85million in Asia Pacific & India, mainly focused in Cochin & Logistics business in India.

Middle East, Europe and Africa

We saw a strong performance in Middle East, Europe and Africa region aided by Logistics. Our focus on revenue synergies continues to attract new customers, while our cost optimisation projects have protected profitability. Performance of Ports and Terminal was steady as a solid performance in Middle East and Africa compensated softer volumes in Europe. Marine Services performance was bolstered by a strong performance at Drydocks World (DDW) and P&O Maritime and Logistics (POML) due to new contract wins and higher charter rates. Improvements at P&O Ferries also contributed to the uplift.

Total reported revenue increased by 25.7% to $6,528 million mainly attributable to the full six months consolidation of Imperial Logistics (2022 – 4 months) while like-for-like revenue grew 14.2%. Adjusted EBITDA reached $2,060 million, up 20.1% on a like-for-like basis. EBITDA margins remained healthy at above 30%. We invested $681 million region, mainly in UAE, Imperial Logistics (Africa), Jeddah (Saudi Arabia), Sokhna (Egypt), London Gateway (UK) and Constanta (Romania).

Australia and Americas

Market conditions in the Australia and Americas have demonstrated mixed trends. The performance of Ports and Terminals in the Americas has been affected by softer consumer demand. In contrast, Australia has shown resilience amidst these challenges and has maintained a more robust performance. Meanwhile, the Logistics segment in these regions has exhibited steady performance. While there are complexities in the current market conditions, we continue to adapt and strive to maintain our solid performance.

Total reported revenue was broadly flat at $1,416 million, while adjusted EBITDA declined by 7.8% to $441 million. EBITDA margins remained at above 30%.

We invested $117 million in capital expenditure in Australia & Americas, mainly in Callao (Peru), syncreon (USA), Caucedo (Dominican Republic).

Cash Flow and Balance Sheet

Adjusted gross debt (excluding bank overdrafts and loans from non-controlling shareholders) stands at $19.2 billion compared to $18.5 billion as of 31 December 2022. Lease and concession fee liabilities account for $4.5 billion, with interest-bearing debt of $14.7 billion as of 30 June 2023. Cash and cash-equivalents on the balance sheet stood at $3.4 billion, resulting in net debt of $15.8 billion or $11.3 billion (on a pre IFRS 16 basis). Our net leverage (adjusted net debt to adjusted EBITDA) stands at 3.2 times on post-IFRS16 basis and would be 2.8x on pre-IFRS16 basis. Cash generation remained solid, with cash from operations steady at $2.5 billion (1H 2022: $2.2 billion).

Capital Expenditure

Consolidated capital expenditure in the first half of 2023 was $910 million, with maintenance and replacement capital expenditure of $298 million. We expect the full-year 2023 capital expenditure to be approximately $2.0 billion, which will be invested in UAE, Jeddah (Saudi Arabia), London Gateway (United Kingdom), Dakar (Senegal), Callao (Peru), Marine Services (P&O Ferries) and Imperial Logistics (South Africa).

Net finance costs before separately disclosed items

The net finance cost for the six months increased to $505 million compared to prior period at $373 million. Increase is mainly due to higher average debt and increase in effective interest rates during the period.

Taxation

The tax expense relates to the tax payable on the profit earned by overseas subsidiaries, as adjusted in accordance with the taxation laws and regulations of the countries in which they operate. For the first six months of 2023, DP World’s income tax expense before separately disclosed items was $213 million (1H 2022: $224 million).

DP World UAE subsidiaries are subject to UAE corporation tax from 1 January 2024 even though UAE CIT legislation is now in force. No deferred tax is recognized in 1H 2023 in relation to Group level adjustments pending further clarifications from the relevant UAE tax authorities.

Profit attributable to non-controlling interests (minority interests)

Profit attributable to non-controlling interests (minority interests) before separately disclosed items was $235 million against 1H 2022 of $163 million mainly due to increase in minority interests in Jebel Ali (UAE).

DP WORLD 1H2023 THROUGHPUT

DP World handled 20.3 million TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units) across its global portfolio of container terminals in the second quarter of 2023, with gross container volumes increasing by 0.5% year-on-year on a reported basis and 2.6% on a like-for-like basis.

In the first half of 2023, DP World handled 39.9 million TEU on a gross basis with container volumes increasing by 0.9% year-on-year on a reported basis and up 3.1% on a like-for-like basis. Jebel Ali (UAE) handled 3.6 million TEU in 2Q2023, on par year-on-year.

At a consolidated level, our terminals handled 11.6 million TEU in 2Q2023 up 0.1% on a reported basis and down 1.7% like-for-like basis. In the first half of 2023, DP World handled 23.0 million TEU, with container volumes increasing by 0.4% year-on-year on a reported basis and decreased 1.5% on a like-for-like basis.

DP World is set to commence operations at Indonesia’s Belawan New Container Terminal (BNCT), after finalising an agreement with the Indonesia Investment Authority (INA) and Pelindo to manage the terminal and begin a major expansion.

The strategic partnership between the Indonesia Investment Authority (INA), Indonesian government-owned port operator Pelindo, and DP World, will create Indonesia’s most direct link with the Malacca Strait, one of the world’s busiest shipping routes.

The agreement was signed by Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO of DP World, Arif Suhartono, President Director of PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Persero), and Ridha Wirakusumah, CEO of Indonesia Investment Authority.

In the longer term, the agreement aims to increase BNCT’s capacity to 1.4 million TEUs, up from 600,000 TEUs currently. BNCT will also aim to attract more direct calls, reducing North Sumatra’s reliance on regional hub ports to access regional and global markets.

The BNCT currently serves as a local hub for the neighbouring provinces in Sumatra. The expansion and modernisation programme will strengthen its position as a major trade and logistics gateway in the Malacca Strait.

Alongside modernising maritime infrastructure, DP World will also work with its partners to connect other terminals and small ports on the Island of Sumatra to further realise the BNCT’s role in reducing container logistics costs within Northern Sumatra.

Minister of State-Owned Enterprises, Erick Thohir, said:
“As directed by President Joko Widodo, there is always strategic value for equity and acceleration of economic growth in the regions and nationally through port development, including this new container terminal at the Port of Belawan which is believed to support downstream to maximize exports in new ways and also accelerate the economy in North Sumatra which continues to grow. This is in accordance with the objectives of the Terminal port development which will strengthen the national port industry ecosystem, as well as the competitiveness of Indonesian ports as strategic trade routes in Southeast Asia and internationally.”

DP World cut direct carbon emissions from its global operations by 5% last year, according to its latest Environmental Social and Governance (ESG) report, reflecting progress towards its 2040 carbon neutral target.

The ESG report, published today, demonstrates the company’s commitment to sustainable business practices, has been developed in accordance with the latest Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Standards.

Over the course of 2022, DP World has tightened its ESG Governance and Risk Management framework, launched an Executive Sustainability Council to provide strategic guidance on the Group’s sustainability strategy and ESG metrics, integrated ESG as a risk into our corporate enterprise risk register, and published its first stand-alone ESG Report c 2021 – a significant milestone for the business.

In 2022 we saw continued global headwinds but that challenged us to push new frontiers of collaboration. DP World has deepened its ties with partners to advance two of its key legacy pillars of Women and Water. Group Chairman and CEO, Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem was announced as the Middle East’s first HeForShe champion by UN Women on International Women’s Day last year and the company entered a 3-year global partnership with WaterAid to deliver water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) infrastructure, starting in Mozambique.

DP World also participated in the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting in Davos and the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) signalling its commitment to ESG progress and expanding its network of partners and advocates.

Decarbonisation is a core focus for DP World and the business has already committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2040 and net zero carbon by 2050 in line with the UAE’s 2050 net zero.

In November at COP 27, the chairman announced that DP World had joined the Green Shipping Challenge and committed to investing up to $500 million to cut CO2 emissions by nearly 700,000 tonnes over the next five years. DP World has also entered a strategic partnership with the Maersk McKinney Moller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping and joined the UN Global Compact’s Think Lab on Just Transition.

The report also highlighted DP World’s total community contributions with a 34% increase from 2021, including several new strategic projects including UN Women, the Earth Shot Prize and in response to emergencies in 2022.

These have helped support more than 255,000 women and girls through community projects such as our partnership with Barefoot College International (BCI) to graduate solar engineers from rural Senegal. We also invested $8.7 million in global education projects.

These efforts have not gone unnoticed in the supply chain industry. DP World has been recognised as the top ESG risk performer by Sustainalytics - a global leader in ESG and Corporate Governance research and ratings - winning the Sustainalytics 2022 Industry and Regional Top-Rated Badge, and achieved an A – (Leadership) rating in the CDP Climate Change submission.
