High Cube Non-Functioning Reefer (HNOR)
What is a High Cube Non-Functioning Reefer (HNOR)?
A high cube non-functioning reefer (HNOR) is a refrigerated container that no longer operates as a cooling unit but can still be used as a container for storage or transport. It retains the high cube dimensions and structure, but its refrigeration machinery is decommissioned or uneconomical to repair.
Originally built to move perishable goods under temperature control, these units are often taken out of refrigeration service due to mechanical failure or repair cost. Once repurposed, they remain useful because of their extra internal height and robust, insulated construction.
Key Features of HNOR Containers
Increased height: High cube format (typically 9 ft 6 in) provides additional vertical capacity compared to standard containers.
Durable construction: Built to withstand demanding maritime conditions even after refrigeration is no longer functional.
Retained insulation: Insulated walls can help maintain a more stable internal environment than a standard dry container.
