Container Freight Station
What is a Container Freight Station (CFS)?
A container freight station is a logistics facility where containerised cargo is consolidated, deconsolidated, stored and cleared through customs. Acting as an intermediate hub between shippers, consignees, carriers and ports, a CFS brings together handling, documentation and short-term storage to smooth the flow of goods in and out of containerised supply chains.
These are the following functions of a container freight station:
Consolidation: Smaller shipments from different shippers are combined into a single container to improve utilisation and reduce cost.
Deconsolidation: Incoming containers are unpacked and individual consignments sorted for onward delivery.
Storage: Short-term warehousing for cargo awaiting clearance, pickup, or further movement.
Customs clearance support: Preparation and facilitation of documents and inspections to speed cross-border processing.
Cargo arriving at the CFS is logged and secured. For export moves, shipments are received, recorded, consolidated into containers, and documentation (manifests, customs paperwork) is prepared and verified before containers are sealed for port delivery. For imports, containers are received, deconsolidated and consignments staged or released to consignees following clearance.
Key Benefits
Consolidation enables shippers to access lower rates associated with fuller container loads.
Professional handling and on-site customs support can reduce delays at origin and destination.
Services such as bonded storage, re-packing and short-term staging let shippers adapt to changing schedules or regulatory needs.
Choosing the Right CFS
The right CFS can influence cost, transit time, and overall shipment reliability, particularly when consolidation, customs clearance, and inland transport are closely linked. Key factors to consider include:
Location: Close proximity to ports, terminals and key inland routes reduces drayage time and cost.
Service mix: Ensure the facility offers the capabilities you need (bonded storage, consolidation, customs handling).
Reputation and reliability: Check track record for security, timeliness and accurate handling.
