Ultra Large Container Ship (ULCS)
What are Ultra Large Container Ships (ULCS)?
Ultra large container ships (ULCS) are the largest class of container vessels, built to move very high volumes of containers on major global trade routes. Their scale helps carriers consolidate cargo into fewer sailings, improving network efficiency and lowering the cost per container where ports and schedules can support it.
Capacity: ULCS carry significantly more containers than conventional vessels, enabling higher volumes per sailing and reducing the number of voyages needed on busy lanes.
Cost efficiency: Moving more cargo in one voyage can improve cost per unit and support more competitive freight pricing, especially on long-haul routes.
Environmental performance: Newer ULCS are often designed for better fuel efficiency per container, helping reduce emissions intensity compared with smaller ships on the same route.
