Reefer

What is a Reefer?

A reefer is a refrigerated container used to move temperature-sensitive cargo. It helps maintain controlled conditions from origin to destination, so products arrive in the required quality and compliance state. They combine insulated walls with an integrated refrigeration unit to hold a set temperature even as external conditions change. Airflow and ventilation settings help keep the load stable, which is especially important for perishables such as fruit, vegetables, seafood, dairy, meat, and pharmaceuticals.

Planning and Handling Reefers

Moving refrigerated cargo is as much about process as it is about equipment. A few practical steps help keep temperature control consistent across port, sea, and inland journeys:

  • Pre-trip inspection (PTI): Reefers are tested before release to confirm the unit can hold the required setpoint and alarms are working.

  • Setpoint and airflow settings: Temperature, ventilation, and humidity (where applicable) need to match the commodity requirements to avoid spoilage or quality loss.

  • Power handovers: Plug-in availability at terminals, on vessels, and during inland moves is planned in advance so the unit is never without power.

  • Documentation and instructions: Clear handling notes (commodity, setpoint, monitoring needs) help terminals, carriers, and truckers maintain the right conditions end to end.
