Out-of-Gauge Cargo

What is Out of Gauge Cargo (OOG)?

Out-of-gauge (OOG) cargo refers to items that exceed standard container dimensions, because of their height, width, or length. Common examples include heavy machinery, large vehicles, and construction equipment. Moving OOG cargo usually requires specialised equipment, planning, and handling to keep the shipment safe and compliant from origin to destination. Because OOG freight does not fit within standard container limits, it often needs tailored transport solutions and closer coordination across the journey.

  • Special equipment and container types: Flat racks and open-top containers are commonly used to accommodate irregular dimensions.

  • Route and clearance planning: Road limits, bridge clearances, and weight restrictions must be checked in advance, including any permits required for inland moves.

  • Secure handling and stowage: Loads need engineered lashing and careful stow planning to reduce movement and risk during transit.

Common Shipping Solutions

The best shipping method usually depends on how the load exceeds standard container limits and what handling is possible at origin and destination. The most common options are:

  • Flat rack containers: Well-suited for wide or oversized loads because the sides are open and cargo can overhang within permitted limits.

  • Open-top containers: Useful for tall items, as cargo can be loaded from above and covered appropriately.

  • Breakbulk shipping: Used for exceptionally large or heavy items that cannot be containerised, with pieces loaded and secured individually on the vessel.
