Origin Motor Terminal (OMT)

What is an Origin Motor Terminal (OMT)?

An origin motor terminal (OMT) is the first terminal a shipment passes through once it leaves the shipper. It’s where freight is received, sorted, and prepared for its next leg, usually a longer line-haul move or distribution to another facility. In simple terms, it’s the starting hub that connects local pickups to the wider transport network.

By organising how freight is checked in, grouped, and dispatched, an OMT helps keep shipments moving in the right direction. When it runs well, routing is smoother, handovers are cleaner, and delays are less likely to ripple through the rest of the journey.

Key Functions of an OMT

  • Cargo receiving: Shipments from multiple shippers are checked in, registered, and prepared for processing.

  • Consolidation and sorting: Freight is grouped by destination, route, or service level to support efficient dispatch.

  • Vehicle loading: Cargo is loaded onto vehicles against planned departures to support safe, orderly outbound movement.
