Feeder Service

What is a Feeder Service?

A feeder service is a container shipping service that transports cargo between smaller regional ports and larger hub ports. It connects ports that are not directly served by mainline vessels, allowing containers to move efficiently to and from long-haul international routes. They make use of smaller vessels that can call at ports with shallower draughts or more limited infrastructure.

What a Feeder Service Covers

  • Regional port calls: Moving containers between smaller regional ports and major hub ports where mainline vessels operate.

  • Container transfer (transhipment): Delivering export containers to hub ports for connection onto long-haul ships, and distributing import containers back to regional destinations.

  • Schedule coordination: Aligning feeder arrival and departure times with mainline vessel windows to maintain connection reliability.

  • Terminal handling interface: Working with port terminals for discharge, loading, and short-term staging of containers.

  • Documentation and booking alignment: Ensuring container details, manifests, and booking references match mainline service requirements.

  • Equipment positioning: Repositioning empty containers between hubs and regional ports to balance supply and demand.

  • Short-sea operations: In some trades, operating as part of coastal or intra-regional services that support larger intercontinental routes.
