Devanning

What is Devanning in Shipping?

Devanning is the process of unloading cargo from a shipping container once it arrives at a port, warehouse, or distribution centre. It begins the moment a shipping container arrives at its destination, typically at a port or warehouse. It involves several steps to ensure smooth operation:

  • First, the container is opened, and the goods inside are carefully extracted. Workers must handle each item with care to prevent any damage.
  • The items are checked against an inventory list to ensure everything that was supposed to arrive has actually been delivered.
  • Finally, the goods are sorted and prepared for their next stop, whether that's storage or immediate distribution.

Why is Devanning Important?

Efficient devanning saves time and money. If done correctly, it enables businesses to maintain a smooth flow of goods through the supply chain. This means products can be made available to consumers more quickly, and companies can avoid the costs associated with storing containers for extended periods. Proper devanning also reduces the risk of damage during unloading, which can lead to losses.
