Consolidation Fee
What is a Consolidation Fee?
A consolidation fee is a charge applied when a logistics provider combines multiple smaller shipments into a single larger load. This is common in less than container load (LCL) ocean freight and less than truckload (LTL) land freight, where cargo does not fill an entire container or vehicle. Consolidation improves space utilisation and allows transport costs to be shared across shipments.
Why is a Consolidation Fee Charged?
When shipments are consolidated, the provider takes on additional handling and coordination tasks, including sorting, repacking where necessary, and ensuring each shipment is separated correctly at destination. The consolidation fee covers these operational activities and the administrative effort required to manage shared loads.
How Are Consolidation Fees Calculated?
Calculation methods vary by provider. Fees may be structured as a flat charge per shipment or based on measurable factors such as weight, volume, or dimensions.
