Carnet

What is a Carnet?

A carnet is an international customs document that acts as a passport for goods, enabling businesses to temporarily transport items across multiple countries without incurring duties or taxes, provided the goods are re-exported within a specified timeframe.

Why is a Carnet important?

There are several reasons why a carnet is essential in international trade:

  • Cost Efficiency: Since you don’t have to pay duties, the overall cost of transporting goods can be significantly reduced.
  • Simplified Procedures: With a carnet, customs procedures become much less complicated, saving time and resources.
  • Flexibility: A carnet can cover various trips to multiple countries. This flexibility is valuable for businesses that attend international trade shows or require temporary equipment overseas.

Who can benefit from a Carnet?

Carnets are beneficial for a wide range of businesses, but are especially useful for:

  • Event Organisers: Companies that need to ship exhibits for trade shows or events.
  • Film & Media Companies: Crews travelling with equipment for shoots.
  • Musicians and Performers: Artists travelling internationally with instruments and stage gear.

How does a Carnet work?

Using a carnet involves a few key steps:

  1. Application: The process begins with applying for a carnet through a designated chamber of commerce or trade association.
  2. Customs Inspection: Upon exiting and entering countries, customs officials may inspect the contents and ensure that items match those described in the carnet document.
  3. Return: Items must be returned to their country of origin within the carnet's validity period, typically one year, to avoid penalties or duties.

Countries participating in the carnet system

The carnet is recognised by over 80 countries globally, facilitating international trade. This vast reach enables businesses to transport goods efficiently between numerous major markets. Some of these countries include the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, China, and Japan, to name just a few. It's crucial to verify that a destination country is part of the carnet system to ensure a seamless transit of goods.
