Break Bulk Cargo
What is Break Bulk Cargo?
Break bulk cargo refers to goods that are transported individually rather than in containers, typically due to their size, shape, or weight. Common examples include machinery, vehicles, and construction materials. These items are too large or irregular to fit into standard shipping containers and must be loaded separately.
How it Differs from Other Shipping Methods
Unlike container shipping, where goods are packed and sealed within standardised units, break bulk cargo is handled piece by piece. This method is used when cargo exceeds the dimensions or weight limits of containers.
Handling Requirements for Break Bulk Cargo
Because break bulk cargo is loaded and secured individually rather than containerised, it requires specialised handling and planning:
Individual lifting operations: Each unit must be lifted and positioned separately using cranes or heavy equipment.
Custom securing methods: Lashing and bracing plans are designed for each cargo piece to prevent movement during transit.
Terminal suitability: Ports must have the lifting capacity and space to manage oversized or heavy units.
