Bill-to Party

What is a Bill-To Party?

The bill-to party is the entity responsible for paying the freight charges. This party may be different from both the shipper and the consignee. By separating financial responsibility from the physical movement of goods, companies can improve accounting efficiency and maintain clearer financial records. It appears in booking instructions and invoicing details and may also be referenced on transport documents depending on the carrier’s process. The bill-to party determines who receives the freight invoice and who is legally responsible for settling charges.

What the Bill-To Party May Be Charged For

  • Freight and surcharges: Base transport cost plus fuel, peak season, or other applicable surcharges.

  • Origin and destination fees: Terminal handling, documentation, or local port charges.

  • Exception charges: Costs such as demurrage, detention, storage, or re-delivery when delays occur.
