Luanda, 25 January 2022 – DP World in Luanda has handed over an elementary school to the Maianga Provincial Government in Luanda after investing $120,000 (USD) to refurbish the facility. The event took place earlier this week and was attended by Ministers of Transportation, Ricardo Viegas D'Abreu, and Education, Luísa Grilo; as well as the Governor of the Province of Luanda, Ana Paula de Carvalho. The school overhaul forms part of the company’s social responsibility program to support the communities in which it operates.

As part of the refurbishment, the school complex benefited from the construction of a multipurpose sports pavilion, painting, new rooms, rehabilitation of bathrooms and green areas, and installation of electricity and water piping. In addition, a technology room fully stocked with new computers and other IT accessories was built to better support students’ development and access to digital tools.

DP World has been managing operations at the Port of Luanda since January 2021, when it secured the tender to operate the Multipurpose Terminal. DP World plans to invest $190 million (USD) in infrastructure, aiming to transform and modernize the terminal into one capable of supporting the diversification of the national economy and the social development of the country. The team at the Port of Luanda aims to grow this strategically located facility into a major trade hub along the western coast of Southern Africa.

A key pillar of DP World Luanda’s operations in Angola is to uplift surrounding communities.

Francisco Pinzón, CEO of DP World in Luanda, said: "Supporting education, the environment and communities are key to our strategic corporate responsibility program, both globally and in Africa. Education is a critical element in driving the prosperity of communities and entire nations – it’s our duty to play a role in improving the experience and expanding the horizons for schoolchildren in Africa".

Speaking at the school’s opening event, Ricardo Viegas d’Abreu, Minister for Transport, emphasized the importance of public private partnerships for economic and social development in Angola. "It is the responsibility of the State to create the conditions for private companies to prosper. It’s up to those companies to invest in good management practice, innovative tools, and training, so the results of their investments can enable us to share together in the success like we have witnessed today, which has greatly benefitted this local community.
