NO MORE LOST TIME AT THE BORDER CROSSING

One of the major problems of trade between EU and Turkey are the kilometric queues at the road border crossings.

DP World is investing in a new state-of-the art RORO terminal in its facility in the Port of Constanta which will enable loading and unloading of trucks and semi-trailers in/from maritime vessels. Constanta is already the largest port in the Black Sea but is also an important hub for trade routes all over the world. In 2022 it had the 2^nd fastest growth of cargo traffic from all European ports, rising to the 11^th place of the biggest ports in Europe.

Because of the administrative procedures and insufficient infrastructure capacity, border crossing between Turkey and EU member states can take up to 48 hours. Sometimes, this is more than 70% of the time spent by a truck on his trip between origin and destination on this corridor. The result are more expensive products for EU consumers and tormented truck drivers.

The RORO terminal that DP World is developing will create a faster trade route between Turkey and Eastern and Central Europe. Trucks that embark on Turkey’s port of Karasu will arrive in Port of Constanta after an 8 hours trip and be ready to continue their journey, with less than 13 hours to Budapest.

At the same time, using the maritime leg is drastically reducing the CO2 emissions by taking thousands of trucks from roads and transporting them on a more sustainable way. For semitrailers there is also the possibility to be loaded from Constanta on trains up to one of the intermodal terminals from Central Europe.
