Children Learn Minding Their Waste With “Zero the Waste”

DP World Yarımca has launched a mobile version of the “Zero the Waste” game as part of its ongoing waste and recycling awareness project, developed in collaboration with the Mind Your Waste Foundation. Children will learn how to reduce and sort different types of wastes, including glass, garbage, metal, paper and plastic with the guidance of the game’s super-hero Atıkcan.

The game aims at raising awareness among children on recycling and waste management.

DP World Yarımca’s joint project with the Mind Your Waste Foundation, Minding My Waste, which was initiated in the Körfez district of Turkey’s north-western province of Kocaeli in 2019 and later expanded across the province, has trained 800 teachers and 10,000 students on sustainable consumption, waste reduction and recycling over the last two years. The project, of which the training materials were designed by Kocaeli University’s Faculty of Education, intends to ultimately reach 30,000 students in Kocaeli.

Zero the Waste helps children to develop awareness through experiencing while also having fun.

Developed by experts for children over the age of 8, the Zero the Waste board game has now been transformed into a mobile game to reach even more children. Aimed at contributing to a cleaner future by teaching children how to reduce and sort waste, the game educates students about recycling, environmental damages of wastes and what to do for a clean living space in a fun way.

Available for free download on all game stores with English and Turkish language options, “Zero the Waste” offers a positive content where children compete only with themselves, and they all learn how to contribute to our environment whether they win the game or lose it. The goal is to achieve change in the behaviours of children and build awareness on environmental issues. The application does not ask for any personal information or require user registration for download.

Children’s playmate: ‘Atıkcan’

Zero the Waste’s mascot character, Atıkcan, after showing the children how to play the game, gives educative tips at every stage of the application. The game features an interactive city design with actual living spaces including home, park, school, sea and port. Atıkcan and children collect wastes in each task area and separate glass, garbage, metal, paper and plastic into 5 different waste bins. There is also a Waste Centre which offers a second chance to sort the wastes, that were thrown into the wrong bin or were not separated. The city in the game becomes more beautiful as it is cleaned. Cleaned areas are visually compared with uncleaned areas, allowing children to observe the difference. At the end of the game, players earn points based on the total amount of garbage they collected and advance levels accordingly.

“We are doing our part for a clean environment”

Reiterating their commitment to raising awareness in the community, particularly among children, about waste sorting, DP World Yarımca CEO, Kris Adams said, “We have already observed how the educative activities we had carried out at schools across Kocaeli before the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic have led to a promising change of behaviour not only in children but also their families and schools. The latest of our efforts to further bolster this positive impact to ensure a cleaner future for our world and instil awareness in young generations is the Zero the Waste mobile game. Available for download on mobile phones, the game is intended to teach children the importance of recycling and waste sorting at an early age. The circle of impact will further expand as these children pass what they have learned on to their family members. As a member of Impact2030, DP World Yarımca is committed to doing its part to protect our oceans and the environment as stipulated by the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal #14: Life Below Water. As part of our joint project with the Mind Your Waste Foundation, we have not only trained school children, but also realized an applaudable transformation in our workplace by reducing the amount of plastic used in our offices and replacing under desk waste bins with recycling boxes. We also distributed thermos mugs to our employees and put water pitchers in offices to eliminate plastic cups and bottled water.”

General Manager of the Mind Your Waste Foundation, Emrah Bilge said, “Our research show that everyone, particularly children, knows the importance of recycling and how litter damages the environment. The point is to translate that knowledge into a habit, a way of living. That is why it is important that children repeat this information in a positive and fun way to adopt the correct set of behaviours”, adding that the Zero the Waste mobile game is an innovative solution to help awareness raising efforts in this regard.
