DP World Unveils the Future of Logistics at Expo 2020 Dubai

Expo 2020 Dubai, one of the unique global platforms for nations, international organizations and companies to showcase their progress and vision for the future, opened its doors to visitors on October 2021.

A leading enabler of global trade - DP World has shared its vision on the logistics of the future based on the concept of seamless, contactless, digitalized and sustainable end-to-end logistics. The goal of DP World, which apart from its growing port operation in Kocaeli, is also establishing a logistics organization (DP World Logistics), is to become one of the leading end-to end logistics providers in Turkey.

The largest ever global event in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia (MEASA) region, Expo Dubai 2020 opened up (after a 12-month Covid-19 pandemic related delay) on October 1, 2021 under the theme 'Connecting Minds, Creating the Future'. Bringing government and private sector representatives from over 190 countries together with new business and investment opportunities. Expo 2020 Dubai will continue to host its visitors until March 31, 2022 with the theme areas of "sustainability", "mobility" and "opportunity" in an area the size of 610 football fields.

With an interconnected global network of 190 business units in 68 countries, DP World, as the Premier Global Trade Partner of Expo 2020 Dubai, showcases its views on the future of end-to-end logistics under the theme of “The Power of Flow”.

Over one third of the GDP in the UAE is being generated by the Dubai economy and DP World is having a significant contribution to this while ensuring the continuity of global trade, from supply chain management to logistics, port operations to all kinds of transportation.

Expressing that what started out as a local port operator in Port Rashid in the UAE in 1972 has developed into a global trade enabler today, Kris Adams, CEO for DP World Yarımca, said, “DP World’s operations include ports and terminals, as well as industrial parks, logistics and economic zones, maritime services, marinas, and increasingly also digital solutions. We have now become an integral part of your supply chain, offering innovative solutions for complex challenges. We think ahead, anticipate change and deploy industry-leading technology to further broaden our digital vision to disrupt world trade and create the smartest, most efficient and innovative solutions, while ensuring a positive and sustainable impact on economies, societies and our planet.

Although the pace of the global economic economy remains uncertain due to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic and disruptions in the global supply chain, DP World remains optimistic on its ability to outperform the industry. As a strong partner of Dubai Expo 2020, we believe that our future visions based on the idea of seamless, contactless, digitalized and sustainable end-to-end trade will mark the beginning of a new era worldwide.”

INVESTMENTS TO CONTINUE THANKS TO TURKEY’S POTENTIAL

DP World Yarımca operates on an area of 46 hectares with a team of more than 700 employees and subcontractors in Turkey. Speaking at Dubai Expo 2020, DP World Yarımca CEO Kris Adams said, “We have been continuing investments in line with Turkey's potential for a long time. With a total investment of US$600 million, of which US$50 million was made in 2020, the annual capacity of DP World Yarımca, one of the largest container ports in Marmara, has been increased to 1.2 million TEU. This gave us the capacity needed to grow further and handle two ULCS (ultra large container ships) simultaneously at our two berths. Our remote-controlled ship-to-shore cranes are currently able to handle the largest container ships afloat. Yarımca port, located at the heart of Turkey's largest industrial zone, aims to provide the best service available in the end-to-end supply chain to Turkey's exporters and importers. To this end, we also offer end-to-end services through other group companies including P&O Ferrymasters, P&O Maritime, DP World Logistics and Unico. The latest development in this regard is the Turkey-Caspian Line, a new shipping route that will be launched by P&O Maritime Logistics between the Caspian Sea and DP World Yarımca. Connecting Central Asia to Turkey, this new route will increase the trade volume between Turkey, Russia and Central Asian markets with lower-cost container transportation. In the past 10 years, Turkish ports have attracted many foreign investments. We anticipate that these investments will increase over the next decade. We, at DP World, believe in Turkey's potential and the advantage of its geographical location as well and therefore, we will continue our investments in 2022.”

DIGITALIZATION BECOMES PIVOTAL FOR THE INDUSTRY

Stating that the end-to-end digital solutions offered to DP World's business partners play a key role in business processes, Adams went on to underline the significance of digitalization today. “With our digital platform #Cargoes#, we enable our customers to have supply chain visibility and securely transfer data using blockchain technology. Our web-based solutions connect both Beneficial Cargo Owners and Shipping Lines and we enable cargo owners and consumers to transport any number of products by sea with a single click.  Our e-commerce platform ‘Dubuy’, on the other hand provides additional benefits to companies to increase their market in the wider Gulf region and parts of Africa. With World Logistics Passport, we have established a loyalty network between companies and forwarders. This means we are not only a port operator, but a business partner that strengthens the commercial infrastructure of companies,” he said.

There are 4 different galleries in the DP World Pavilion, where future visions based on the idea of seamless, contactless, digitalized, and sustainable end-to-end trade under the theme "The Power of Flow". In the Connectivity Gallery, which illustrates a future of end-to-end digital global trade, 100 years of Dubai's development in economy and trade is displayed on a special 40-meter panel. The Mobility Gallery will feature an entertaining and interactive presentation of how integrated trade flow takes place at DP World's operating points around the world while the Opportunity Gallery showcases the opportunities arising from innovation, data and the effective use of artificial intelligence. In the Sustainability Gallery, projects are exhibited that shows DP World's economic, social and environmental sustainability works to protect planet.

RESHAPING THE FUTURE

Underlining that they believe a sustainable growth is as important as growth itself, Kris Adams said, “Expo is built around three main themes: digitalization, innovation and sustainability. This is also the direction we are taking in our investments for the future of transportation. We will capitalize on all the possibilities offered by smart logistics and mobility always making sure that the sustainability impact on our planet and societies remains positive”
